In its inaugural year, The HistoryMaker Awards was named Looking Back, Facing Forward. Honorees were Barney Frank and Robbie Samuels.

The HistoryMaker Award

The HistoryMaker Award presented to those whose lifetime achievements have had a significant and positive effect on Boston and Massachusetts' LGBTQ communities.

The Lavender Rhino Award

Named after one of the early symbols of the Gay Liberation movement, the Lavender Rhino Award is presented to an emerging activist or organization whose impact on the local LGBTQ community deserves recognition.

Barney Frank

Barney Frank
Barney Frank served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts from 1981 to 2013. As a member of the Democratic Party, he served as chairman of the House Financial Services Committee (2007–2011) and was a leading co-sponsor of the 2010 Dodd–Frank Act, a sweeping reform of the U.S. financial industry. Frank, a resident of Newton, Massachusetts, was considered the most prominent gay politician in the United States.

Robbie Samuels founded Socializing for Justice (SoJust), a nearly 3,000 member grassroots cross-cultural, cross-issue progressive community and network in Boston based on the philosophies of abundance and radical inclusion. He worked as Senior Manager of Events and Donor Engagement at Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), and is now a full-time speaker and consultant.
