The History Project invites you to celebrate Boston’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) history and to join us as we recognize the community members and organizations who make history every day.

The HistoryMaker Award

The HistoryMaker Award has been presented since 2009 to those whose lifetime achievements have had a significant and positive effect on Boston and Massachusetts' LGBTQ communities. Recipients of this award include Congressman Barney Frank, GLAD’s Civil Rights Project director Mary Bonauto, and longtime BAGLY executive director Grace Sterling Stowell.

The Lavender Rhino Award

Named after one of the early symbols of the Gay Liberation movement, the Lavender Rhino Award is presented to an emerging activist or organization whose impact on the local LGBTQ community deserves recognition.

About the Recipients:

Byron Rushing

Byron Rushing and Frieda Garcia
During his thirty-two years (and counting) in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, The Hon. Byron Rushing has been an indefatigable leader and ally to Commonwealth's LGBT communities and diverse residents. From sponsoring the gay rights bill and the law to end discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in public schools, to his leadership during the constitutional convention to maintain marriage equality in Massachusetts, he has demonstrated a clear and powerful commitment to equality and to human and civil rights.

The History Project also salutes his outstanding work in local history, such as serving as President of the Museum of Afro-American History and working on the restoration of the African Meeting House.

Rep. Rushing made an unparalleled contribution to history and will, no doubt, continue to make history in the years to come.
